St. Louis' Gateway Arch to the West is symbolic of the American experience and the tenacity with which we approach any difficult challenge.
When we arrived in June of 2000, a massive thunderstorm was building. Lightning flashed all around us. Saner heads would have sought shelter and come back later. But like the Arch builders, we were not going to be turned away.
I shot the photograph without the other half intentionally. I wanted the angle and altitude to speak for themselves. Going up. Ever up and never down.
Beneath the skin of stainless steel, a cogged system of tiny 5 person cars can move you to the top of the arch. It's worth the time. We all have an Arch in our lives.
Are you headed up?
